Life as a UF CJC Student

Image
The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications is life changing.  I transferred to the University of Florida in 2018, coming in as a Junior. I had dreams of becoming a broadcast journalist in the future. My first class happened to be in the college of journalism and communications in Weimer Hall.  I felt at home very quickly. Once I started working in the newsroom (INC), I adapted and began learning what it takes to become a real news reporter. I feel that it has given me many skills that I need to become the best reporter I can be. I have gotten experience even doing in-the-field stories, and even interviewed some local celebrities like Steve Spurrier and Bill Nelson .  The center CMIR (Center for Media Innovation) has really been a huge part of my transition to UF. It has been a big part of helping my own personal research during my stories. I feel that since the outbreak of COVID-19 , the CJC has done a great job of keeping its students active with

"The Tipping Point" Review

Image
The Tipping Point is a book written by Malcolm Gladwell and it was originally published in 2000.  The whole idea of the book, and I say the word “idea” on purpose, is that many people come up with great ideas, but once an idea truly reaches its Tipping Point, it spreads faster than you could ever imagine. “The Tipping Point” is written with the perspective that there are three main teachings when it comes to ideas. The first one is that once the idea reaches its “ tipping point ”, it spreads fast. The next is that there are three different genres of people that help the idea reach that point. The last is that, without the idea being mem orable, the idea will never truly reach the tip. Gladwell describes the first teaching like a wildfire . Once it catches fire (or reaches the tipping point), the idea spreads uncontrollably. In today’s society, there are a lot of ideas or companies that experience the wildfire effect. Let’s take snapchat, for example. When it first began, there

Classmates' Blogs Continued

My Favorite Blogs Continued Christopher O'Brien posts about his time in New York City. He gives inside scoops about what is going on in the city and also shares some of his favorite places to eat there. Karla Robaina shares about secret and fun places to go in Gainesville. I really enjoy her blogs because I often think there isn't much to do in Gainesville. Sarina Nunes writes blogs about the best restaurants in Gainesville and posts some different pop culture content. I'm definitely a "foodie" so her blogs are very helpful.

I would really like to use some of her advice for eating healthier during this pandemic. Camron Lunn posts about different movies that are either new or classics. I also love movies so I find his blog very interesting! Lauren Reynolds blogs about health and fitness. Her posts are very helpful for right now, considering she gives tips for at-home work outs.

Erika Stallings Bio

Erika Stallings Bio Blog My name is Erika Stallings and I am a Senior at the University of Florida.     I am studying Telecommunications and have a passion for news and media. I have always had a fascination for how a news station puts together its shows and the drive some reporters have when covering stories. My dream is to one day work for a national news network, or be a entertainment reporter.    Since being accepted to UF I have learned a lot about writing, filming and editing for television news. My love for news and media has only gotten deeper now that I am diving into fascinating stories in my local community.  I have covered many different stories in Gainesville in very different places. Some of my favorite pieces I have worked on were when I interviewed a former governor , played with some puppies , visited a museum , worked on a house, and went to a fire station .

Coronavirus Invades the U.S.

Image
Throughout this past week many announcements have been made regarding the Coronavirus .  In the past week alone, over 1 50 universities have closed their doors for several weeks. The University of Florida is one among those United States university. UF will be closing its doors on Monday, and students will be expected to maintain their work online. The campus will re-open for classes on March 30, pending the virus pandemic. President Trump also mandated that the borders be closed by March 13, at midnight; only giving U.S. citizens 48-hours to return home. This was worrisome for some UF students studying abroad because they are now trapped in areas where the virus may be more rampant. Many sporting events have also been suspended such as the SEC basketball tournament, March Madness, and all NCAA collegiate sports tournaments for the semester. The SEC has suspended spring sports until March 30. Disney World and Disneyland have also announced its shut downs, which will be the f
