Coronavirus Invades the U.S.

Throughout this past week many announcements have been made regarding the Coronavirus. 

Image result for coronavirus definitionIn the past week alone, over 150 universities have closed their doors for several weeks. The University of Florida is one among those United States university. UF will be closing its doors on Monday, and students will be expected to maintain their work online. The campus will re-open for classes on March 30, pending the virus pandemic.

President Trump also mandated that the borders be closed by March 13, at midnight; only giving U.S. citizens 48-hours to return home. This was worrisome for some UF students studying abroad because they are now trapped in areas where the virus may be more rampant.
Many sporting events have also been suspended such as the SEC basketball tournament, March Madness, and all NCAA collegiate sports tournaments for the semester. The SEC has suspended spring sports until March 30.
Disney World and Disneyland have also announced its shut downs, which will be the fourth time in history that the park has closed.

Rescue Pets

This week I was able to cover a story that I absolutely loved. I got to work with some adorable furry friends! Senator Kevin Rader is attempting to pass a bill that would make shelter animals the official "State Pet." I went to Alachua County Animal Services to ask what their opinion on this was. I spoke with the shelter director, Ed Williams about the bill. He said he was ecstatic to hear more attention would be brought to these sweet animals. Williams said, "Anything that increases foot traffic to our shelters, and increases adoptions is a wonderful idea." The shelter has tens of hundreds of dogs, and Williams said he hopes that many of them will find a home. "We have a whole lot of dogs that need homes...People should realize that even though the dogs are from shelters, they're not damaged goods." Japan Cancels School Due to Coronavirus

Japan closes schools for an entire month due to fast spreading Coronavirus.  In the past couple weeks the outbreak of the Coronavirus has been terrorizing the public. The virus, also referred to as COVID-19 , was first discovered in China. It has since spread throughout the Asian and European countries, as well as a few cases found in the United States. Japan has recently shocked the nation by shutting down all schools for nearly a month . Closing schools for more than two weeks is almost un-heard of; many parents are surprised by the drastic step to help keep the country healthy. If the virus is continuing to spread, there is talk that the 2020 Olympics to be held in Tokyo will also be canceled. The Olympics has only been canceled in 1916, 1940, and 1944 due to World War I and World War II. Residents in the U.S. have been nervous about the eventual spread of the virus in the states.
